Devo: Background Checks

Have you ever felt weighed down by your past mistakes? Recently, I faced a situation that reminded me of the power of God’s forgiveness. Just a few weeks ago, my husband and I were applying for a new house. And as some of you may know, that process includes a background check. Well to my surprise (not really) mine was horrendous! I didn’t make some of the best decisions when I was younger, and my credit definitely reflects that! I was so hurt and embarrassed. It was like my past decisions were staring me in the face, reminding me of every poor decision I had made. As I read the report, my heart sank. The weight of my past decisions felt heavier than ever.  Seeking comfort, I prayed and reached out to my four strongest soldiers: my husband, my mother and mother in law, and my best friend/cousin in law, Lydia. Of course they all knew what to say to cheer me up, but it was Lydia’s response that stood out to me the most. She said “Makes me extra thankful that the Lord wipes those ‘background’ checks clean before judgment day for us.” Her words reminded me of Psalm 103:12, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” It’s comforting to know that God’s forgiveness is boundless, covering all of our mistakes. This verse reminds us that God’s forgiveness is complete and infinite. No matter how far we’ve strayed or how many mistakes we’ve made, His grace covers it all.

Think about the times you’ve felt burdened about your past. Hebrews 8:12 reassures us that God not only forgives our sins, but chooses to forget them. How does this promise change your perspective? Just like a background check that reveals our past mistakes. God wipes our slate clean, giving us a fresh start. So, while earthly background checks might remind us of our past errors, we find comfort in knowing that through Christ, our spiritual background check is spotless. His love and forgiveness are boundless, offering us hope and renewal.

If you’re struggling with your past, take a moment to pray and ask for God’s forgiveness. Trust that He wipes your slate clean. Thank you for talking with me. Let’s walk with Him.
