Will Your Entertainment Affect Your Eternity?
1 Corinthians 13 is commonly referred to as “The Love Chapter.” While I understand why it’s called that, I prefer the phrase “The Love Book.” The Bible in its entirety is about love—God’s love for us, and the love we are called to show others. But today, let’s set our attention on 1 Corinthians 13:6: “does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth.” (NKJV)
Though this verse sits in the middle of “The Love Chapter,” it carries a deeper meaning we need to consider daily.
Most of us enjoy winding down with entertainment—movies, TV shows, video games, or music. But here’s the question: what are we absorbing into our minds and hearts? Are the movies filled with profanity or normalizing sinful behavior? Do the games glorify violence or crude language? Does the music we listen to speak life, or does it celebrate things we’d be ashamed to share with fellow believers?
When we consume these things, are we not in some way rejoicing in iniquity? If we stream it, play it, or purchase it, we’re supporting and celebrating what it represents.
That’s why Paul’s words matter so much. Love doesn’t rejoice in sin—it rejoices in truth. Philippians 4:8 echoes this beautifully: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Love calls us to be mindful of what we let into our hearts. Entertainment isn’t neutral—it shapes us. And if we want our lives to reflect Christ, we must choose to rejoice in truth, not iniquity.
